Spending some thirteen years in the automotive industry gave me a deep appreciation for automobiles. I’m not talking about appreciation from a transportation standpoint here. Heck, any car or truck provides transportation, even the over priced, over hyped glorified golf carts do that.
I’m talking horsepower… Yeah, NASCAR and NHRA stand atop of their respective mountains when it comes to performance automobiles; but only a select group of elite athletes have access to that power. But what about us “normal” folk?
Enter Carroll Shelby; ultimately, the designer and builder of my most favorite car ever… The AC Cobra:
The Cobra was an absolute beast on the track in the mid to late ’60s; annihilating Corvettes and even challenging Ferraris quite well in some races. It was offered in the US for private purchase, but was ultimately a failure.
Mr. Shelby partnered with Ford from 1965 to 1970 (and from 2007 until today) to help create some of the most badass Mustangs ever created. These powerful, stunning vehicles were available to the masses and, while expensive, they sold pretty well.
Y’all remember Eleanor from “Gone in 60 Seconds”?
She was a Shelby.
He built some kick ass “new” Mustangs as well…
Hell… after parting ways with Ford he did a lot of work with Dodge. In my opinion, the majority of the cars he produced for Dodge were sissy cars…
WTF is that? Definitely not as pretty as a Mustang. Actually…. It’s putrid!
However, Carroll Shelby was involved with the development of one of Dodge’s best performance cars from the ’90s forward; the Viper.
Shoot… I saw a Viper last week at Brookie’s soccer game…. in Brunswick!
It’s a beautiful piece of hardware…. amiright?
Anyway…. Mr. Shelby left us this past Thursday. It’s sad to see him go.
R.I.P. Carroll Shelby
