Mike Wilbon JUST said it to Tony Kornheiser on ESPN, “Cleveland is the longest suffering sports city in America…” I’m so sick of hearing that… but it’s true.
Since 1970, the Cavaliers have never won a championship. Since 1901, the Indians have won two World Series; 1920 and 1948.
The Browns commenced business in 1946 in the All-America Football Conference (Competed with the NFL) and won all 4 championships from 1946-1949. After the AAFC merged with the NFL in 1950, Cleveland won 4 MORE championships in the NFL, the last in 1964. Unfortunately, the Super Bowl era started in 1967 and the Brown’s haven’t won one of those!
Cleveland’s last major sports championship was the Browns in 1964…
Since then, we’ve painfully experienced these moments in Cleveland sports history:
“Red Right 88” ~ Browns QB Brian Sipe throws a late pick that keeps Cleveland from advancing to the AFC Championship.
“The Drive” ~ Cleveland’s up 20-13 over the Broncos in the AFC Championship Game with like 5 minutes to go. Denver QB Horseface John Elway engineers a 98 yard drive to tie the game…. Ultimately, Denver won in overtime.
“The Fumble” ~ I don’t wanna talk about it… Google it yourself…
“The Shot” ~
After all this crap, Cleveland sports just suck the soul out of you… Years ago I decided I’d put all my efforts and emotions into the Browns.
That being said, I’m a fair weather Indians fan! Once they’re into the playoffs I’m a huge fan! Tonight, they play the Tampa Bay Rays in a wild card match…
Tomorrow night, the Buffalo Bills come to town and I have no clue what to expect… Buffalo looks like a tough team, but so does Cleveland!
I’m just fearful that ESPN is setting up Cleveland so they can play their highlight reels of how horrible Cleveland teams are. I’d rather our teams fly under the radar.
Shit… the Browns have only won two in a row. I try not to get excited.
Let’s see what these Indians can do, however!
