Move along folks, nothing to see here.
The final player picked in the NFL draft receives the nickname “Mr. Irrelevant.” Yesterday, the Houston Texans selected Memphis free safety Lonnie Ballentine with that dreadful, final 256th pick.
He prolly won’t make the Texans’ final roster. Most seventh round picks don’t!
Seven picks before Houston chose Lonnie Ballentine, the St. Louis Rams selected Missouri defensive end Michael Sam at 249.
Normally, Sam’s pick would get less attention than that of Mr. Irrelevant, but he was trending heavily on Twitter and Facebook last night and seemed to be the MOST relevant player selected in the draft.
Because he’s gay. He announced that in an interview a few months back.
I don’t understand why that’s such a big deal. Remember, folks, the NFL is a business. Teams that aren’t the Browns have only one goal: to win games. Period!
Aside from the Browns, most NFL scouts are pretty smart and know a good player when they see one. At February’s NFL combine, a number of scouts claimed that Sam, at 6′ 2″ and 261 pounds, was too small to play defensive end and too slow to play linebacker in the NFL.
Yes, the video of Michael Sam getting the call from the Rams telling him that they’re drafting him is touching…
… but lots of athletes cry when their NFL dreams finally come to fruition. There’s just not a lot of footage of the one’s who aren’t gay.
Don’t get me wrong… I’m not anti gay, I’m anti fame whoring. I believe Michael Sam fame whored his way into getting drafted by “coming out” a few months ago.
Think about it… All 32 NFL teams woulda looked like sexist assholes had they not drafted Michael Sam.
Speaking of fame whores, the ultimate fame whore and douchebag president Barack Obama only commented on 1 of 256 young men selected in the draft over the past few days. He said he:
“…Congratulates Michael Sam, the Rams and the NFL for taking an important step forward today in our Nation’s journey” and that “from the playing field to the corporate boardroom, LGBT Americans prove everyday that you should be judged by what you do and not who you are.”
Michael Sam will certainly be judged by what he does and not who he is by the Rams… That’s just the business of football! Will he improve last year’s 15th ranked defense or will he get cut?
Only time will tell…
If the Rams cut him they will be labeled as sexist or anti gay, neither of which I believe will be appropriate considering the business of winning games.
